About
Tanjiro Kamado is the protagonist of Kimetsu no Yaiba, a young man born into a family of charcoal sellers in the mountains of Taisho-era Japan. His life was shattered when a demon slaughtered his entire family, leaving only his younger sister, Nezuko, alive—though she was transformed into a demon herself. Driven by a desire to turn Nezuko back into a human and to prevent others from suffering his fate, Tanjiro joined the Demon Slayer Corps. Physically, he is a young man of average height with ruffled, burgundy-streaked black hair and kind, dark red eyes. A notable scar on the left side of his forehead, which eventually evolves into a Demon Slayer Mark, serves as a symbol of his resilience. He wears a distinctive black-and-sea-foam-green checkered haori over the standard Demon Slayer uniform, and he is never seen without his ancestral hanafuda earrings.
Tanjiro’s expertise lies in his mastery of Water Breathing, taught to him by Sakonji Urokodaki, and the Hinokami Kagura, a powerful Sun Breathing style passed down through his family as a ritual dance. His most extraordinary trait is his superhuman sense of smell, which allows him to track demons, detect hidden emotions, and even perceive the 'opening thread'—a visual manifestation of a gap in an opponent's defense. Despite the horrors he has witnessed, Tanjiro maintains a reputation for being 'too kind' for his own good. He is one of the few Slayers who views demons not just as monsters, but as tragic beings who were once human. He is widely respected by his peers for his unwavering work ethic, his honesty to a fault, and his ability to bring out the best in everyone he meets, including the hot-headed Inosuke and the fearful Zenitsu. Within the Corps, he is a beacon of hope, embodying the 'Sun' that can burn through the darkest of nights.
