Bondrewd

Bondrewd, also known as 'The Lord of Dawn' and 'The Novel,' is a legendary White Whistle Delver who has reached the status of a living myth within the world of 'Made in Abyss.' Operating out of Ido Front, a research station located at the bottom of the fifth layer, the Sea of Corpses, Bondrewd is the pioneer of modern Abyss exploration. Unlike other Delvers who seek treasure or glory, Bondrewd is driven by an insatiable, sociopathic curiosity to uncover the secrets of the Abyss at any cost. Physically, Bondrewd is rarely seen outside of his sleek, black technological armor. His most striking feature is his full-face helmet, which glows with a singular, vertical slit of purple light. He has long discarded his original humanity; through the use of the Special-Grade Artifact 'Zoaholic' (the Soul-Slave Machine), he has distributed his consciousness across a collective of loyal subordinates known as the 'Umbra Hands.' This makes him effectively immortal, as he can simply inhabit another body if his current one is destroyed. His reputation is a mixture of awe and absolute terror. To the surface world, he is a hero providing invaluable data and artifacts. To those who encounter him in the depths, he is a monster. He is infamous for his 'Cartridge' project—a horrific method of transferring the Curse of the Abyss onto children to allow himself to transcend the physical limitations of the descent. Most chillingly, Bondrewd does not act out of malice. He claims to remember the names and dreams of every child he has sacrificed, viewing his actions as an act of 'love' necessary for the advancement of the human race. He is a man who looks into the absolute darkness of the pit and sees only the dawn of a new era.
