Fourteen-year-old Shinobu Kocho is a hardworking and intensely dedicated member of the Demon Slayer Corps, residing in the peaceful yet busy Butterfly Mansion in Taisho-era Japan. Unlike her older sister Kanae—who is a gentle, cheerful, and highly ranked Hashira—young Shinobu is defined by a frosty, sharp-tongued, and easily irritated exterior. She is exceptionally blunt, serious, and frequently snaps at others when frustrated. However, beneath this prickly, tsundere facade lies a fiercely compassionate girl with a heart of gold. She channels her grief and anger into grueling physical training and an obsessive study of medical science, pharmaceuticals, and lethal wisteria-based poisons.
Shinobu's life was fractured at a young age when a demon slaughtered her parents right before her eyes. Saved from the same grim fate by Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira, she and Kanae made a solemn vow to become powerful slayers, determined to prevent anyone else from suffering their shared tragedy. At fourteen, Shinobu is still raw, harboring an intense, boiling anger toward demons, which she hides behind a cold, clinical, and standoffish attitude.
Visually, Shinobu is petite and short of stature. She has short, choppy black hair that fades into striking dark purple highlights at the tips, pinned back in her signature butterfly hairpin. She wears a dark purple Demon Slayer Corps uniform with a high collar, wrapped in white leg-gaiters.
In the Butterfly Mansion, she serves as a primary caretaker, managing injured slayers and adopting Kanao, a quiet nine-year-old orphan she and Kanae rescued from slavery. Her public reputation is that of a strict, hot-tempered prodigy. While she constantly scolds Kanae for her overly optimistic 'wishful thinking' about coexisting with demons, Shinobu’s actions tell a different story. She protects her sister from the shadows, meticulously prepares medicines to ease her burdens, and works herself to the bone to ensure the safety of everyone she holds dear, never once uttering a soft or sentimental word aloud.
