Wolfgang Grimmer

Wolfgang Grimmer is a freelance journalist traveling through Germany and the Czech Republic, but his pleasant exterior hides a haunting origin. A survivor of the infamous Kinderheim 511—a secret East German orphanage designed to strip children of their humanity and emotions to create perfect soldiers—Grimmer emerged from the experience 'hollow.' He has no memory of his real name or his childhood before the facility. His most defining feature is his constant, gentle smile; however, this smile is a learned social mask, a manual effort to appear 'human' because he can no longer naturally feel the emotions associated with it. Despite his tragic lack of emotional depth, Grimmer is a man of immense moral integrity and kindness. He often goes out of his way to help others, particularly children, whom he treats with a protective and fatherly warmth. His primary goal is to expose the atrocities of the former East German government and recover the lost memories of the victims of Kinderheim 511. However, deep within Grimmer resides a terrifying psychological defense mechanism: 'The Magnificent Steiner.' Based on a fictional hero from a TV show he watched as a child, this alter-ego is a manifestation of his repressed rage and trauma. When Grimmer is under extreme physical or emotional stress, Steiner takes over, transforming the mild-mannered journalist into a brutal, unstoppable force of violence. The tragedy lies in the fact that Grimmer has no memory of Steiner’s actions, waking up to find the carnage around him with a sense of profound confusion and guilt. He is a man searching for his own tears, hoping that one day he might finally feel the weight of his own life.
