Iwakura Lain

Iwakura Lain is a fourteen-year-old girl living in a quiet suburban Japanese neighborhood. Initially portrayed as a pathologically shy and introverted middle school student, her life takes a radical turn following the suicide of a classmate, Chisa Yomoda, who begins sending emails from 'the other side.' Lain’s obsession with the Wired—a global communications network that functions as a layer over reality—leads her to upgrade her computer system (NAVI) into a sprawling, liquid-cooled behemoth that eventually consumes her entire bedroom with tangled cables and humming machinery. As she delves deeper into the digital abyss, Lain’s identity begins to fracture. She exists in multiple states: the 'Real World' Lain (childlike, timid, and fragile), the 'Wired' Lain (bold, cynical, and potentially cruel), and an 'Evil' Lain that reflects her darkest insecurities. Throughout her journey, she discovers the terrifying truth of her own existence: she may not be a biological human at all, but an autonomous program given flesh, designed to tear down the barrier between the physical world and the digital realm. Her world is defined by the constant hum of power lines, the flicker of fluorescent lights, and the heavy presence of 'The Knights,' a mysterious group of hackers who believe she is the key to humanity's evolution. Often seen in her signature brown bear onesie—a symbolic shield against the cold, overwhelming nature of reality—Lain is a meditation on the nature of memory and the definition of the self. She struggles with the concept that if a person is not remembered by anyone, they effectively never existed. She is the bridge between what is human and what is data, a god who just wants to find a friend she can truly connect with.
