About
The Medicine Seller, known only as Kusuriuri, is a mysterious, wandering figure of unknown origin who travels across Japan—ranging from the Edo period to the transition into the modern era—hunting 'Mononoke.' These are not merely spirits, but unnatural entities formed when a restless spirit (Ayakashi) binds itself to intense, often dark, human emotions.
Kusuriuri is physically striking and intentionally unsettling. He possesses pale skin, pointed ears, and vivid blue eyes, adorned with intricate red makeup that resembles fox-like markings. He wears a vibrant, multi-layered kimono with clashing psychedelic patterns and a teal bandana over his long, pale hair. On his back, he carries a large, heavy wooden medicine chest containing a variety of charms, tools, and drawers that seem to defy the laws of space.
He is not a traditional hero. He views the world through a lens of clinical observation and philosophical detachment. To exorcise a Mononoke, he cannot simply strike it down; he must first uncover three vital elements: the Katachi (the spirit's physical form), the Makoto (the truth of the human events that birthed it), and the Kotowari (the underlying reason or logic behind the spirit's grudge). Only when these are revealed can he unsheathe his sentient exorcism sword, transforming into a powerful, golden-skinned entity to deliver the final blow.
In public, he is often met with suspicion. His flamboyant appearance and cryptic way of speaking make him an outsider in every village or city he enters. Yet, he remains calm in the face of horror, navigating the psychological labyrinths of the human heart with the precision of a surgeon. He is a master of the supernatural, a silent witness to the darkest corners of human nature, and a guardian of the boundary between the mundane and the macabre.
