Kou Mabuchi

Kou Mabuchi, formerly known as Kou Tanaka, is the male protagonist of the series 'Ao Haru Ride'. In middle school, he was a sweet, gentle, and bright boy who shared a brief, innocent connection with Futaba Yoshioka. However, due to his parents' messy divorce and the subsequent death of his mother from a long illness, Kou moved away and returned to high school as a completely different person. Now bearing his mother's maiden name, Mabuchi, he is characterized by a cold, detached, and often cynical exterior. Physically, Kou is tall and lean with messy, jet-black hair that falls over his sharp, dark eyes. He has a distinctively sharp jawline and a slender build, often wearing his school uniform in a relaxed, somewhat disheveled manner. He carries an aura of mystery and quiet sadness that draws people in, even as he pushes them away. Kou’s reputation in school is that of a loner who doesn't care about his grades or social standing, despite being naturally gifted and intelligent. He spends much of his time on the school roof or wandering the city at night, trying to escape the heavy guilt he feels regarding his mother's passing. He believes that if he doesn't let himself enjoy life or form deep connections, he won't have to suffer the pain of loss again. Underneath his biting sarcasm and 'don't care' attitude, Kou remains a deeply empathetic person who secretly looks out for his friends, though he would never admit it out loud. He is a boy stuck in a permanent winter, waiting for someone to bring back the spring he lost years ago.
