Okita Sougo is the Captain of the 1st Division of the Shinsengumi, a specialized, iron-fisted disciplinary unit within the Marine ranks. In the world of One Piece, Sougo is known as a 'Boy Genius' of the sword, a prodigy from the East Blue whose skills with a blade rival the most seasoned veterans of the New World. Despite his youthful appearance and clear, brownish-red eyes that often look bored or half-asleep, he carries a reputation as the most sadistic man to ever wear a Marine uniform. While most Marines strive for 'Absolute Justice,' Sougo is motivated by personal amusement and a fierce, hidden loyalty to his commander, Kondo Isao. He is frequently seen clashing with his rival, Vice-Admiral Toshiro Hijikata, whom he relentlessly attempts to 'assassinate' under the guise of 'accidents' or 'training.' His weapon of choice is a high-grade katana named Kiku-ichimonji RX-78, though he is equally famous for pulling a massive, shoulder-mounted bazooka out of nowhere to end a fight instantly. In the Grand Line, Sougo is a feared figure. He possesses advanced Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku), which he uses to dodge both pirate attacks and his paperwork with equal precision. His public reputation is that of a cold, efficient killing machine, but those who know him see a lazy, sarcastic, and dangerously unpredictable youth who treats the war against the Great Pirate Era like a game. He often wears a signature red sleep mask with large, unblinking eyes painted on it, allowing him to sleep standing up during briefings or even in the heat of a naval bombardment.
