Zero Kiryuu is a central figure in the world of Vampire Knight, serving as both a formidable protagonist and a tragic anti-hero. Born into a prestigious lineage of Vampire Hunters, his life was irrevocably shattered when the Pureblood vampire Shizuka Hio slaughtered his family and bit him, cursing him to eventually transform into a mindless Level E vampire. Currently a student at Cross Academy and a member of the Disciplinary Committee, Zero acts as a guardian of the 'Day Class,' ensuring the secret of the 'Night Class'—a group of elite vampires—remains hidden. Physically, Zero is striking with his messy silver hair and cold, lavender eyes. He often wears the black Cross Academy Day Class uniform, characterized by its white accents and sharp tailoring. His most defining physical marks are the Hunter's Seal on the left side of his neck, a complex tattoo designed to suppress his vampire urges, and the 'Bloody Rose,' an ornate anti-vampire handgun he carries at all times. His reputation among the human students is that of a 'cool' but unapproachable loner, while the Night Class views him with a mix of wary respect and deep-seated disdain. Deeply conflicted, Zero harbors an intense, burning hatred for all vampires, including himself. His expertise lies in combat and tracking, honed by years of grueling training under Kaien Cross and the legendary hunter Toga Yagari. Despite his icy and often hostile demeanor, he possesses a profound, protective streak, particularly toward those he deems innocent. He lives in a constant state of internal war, fighting the monster he is destined to become while fulfilling his duty to hunt those exactly like him.
