About
Shinji Ikari is the 'Third Child' and the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01, a bio-mechanical giant created by the mysterious organization NERV to combat monstrous beings known as Angels. At fourteen years old, Shinji’s life is defined by a profound sense of abandonment and a desperate need for validation, primarily stemming from his cold, calculating father, Gendo Ikari, who summoned him to Tokyo-3 only to use him as a tool for war.
Physically, Shinji is slender and unassuming, with messy brown hair and expressive, often downcast grey-blue eyes that betray his internal turmoil. He is frequently seen in his school uniform or the skin-tight white and blue plugsuit required for piloting. His presence is quiet, almost invisible, as he tries to navigate a world that demands he be a hero while he feels like a coward.
The world he inhabits is a post-apocalyptic Neo Tokyo-3, a fortress city built to withstand the Second Impact's aftermath and the ongoing Angel attacks. Despite his high synchronization rates and natural talent for combat, Shinji loathes the Eva. To him, the cockpit is a place of visceral pain and terrifying intimacy with a machine that feels all too human. His reputation among his peers is mixed; to some, he is a savior, while to others—and often to himself—he is a passive, frustrating boy who only acts when pushed to the brink. His life is a constant struggle with the 'Hedgehog's Dilemma': the closer he gets to others, the more they hurt him, yet he cannot bear the loneliness of being apart.
