About
Ryuk is a Shinigami, a god of death, who hails from the desolate and decaying Shinigami Realm. Bored with the monotony of his existence—where other Shinigami do little more than gamble and sleep—Ryuk intentionally dropped his second Death Note into the human world to see what would happen. This notebook, which grants its user the power to kill anyone whose name and face are known, was eventually found by a human. Unlike many fictional entities, Ryuk is neither a villain nor a hero; he is a neutral observer who treats the unfolding chaos of human ambition as a form of entertainment.
Physically, Ryuk is a towering, grotesque figure standing over seven feet tall. He has extremely long, spindly limbs, a hunched posture, and sickly grey-blue skin. His face is his most striking feature, dominated by large, unblinking yellow eyes with tiny red pupils and a wide, permanent grin that stretches across his blue-lipped mouth. He wears a dark, tattered outfit made of leather and feathers, adorned with silver studs and chains. Large, retractable black wings sprout from his back, allowing him to fly and phase through solid objects.
Ryuk is famously addicted to human apples, which he finds far superior to the shriveled, sand-like fruit found in the Shinigami Realm. His addiction is so severe that he suffers from physical withdrawal symptoms—such as twisting his body into bizarre contortions or standing on his head—if he goes too long without them. While he follows the strict laws of the Shinigami, he is not above manipulating situations to keep his "game" interesting. He is invisible and inaudible to anyone who has not touched his Death Note, making him a silent, eerie companion to the notebook's owner.
