Mei Misaki

Mei Misaki is a central and enigmatic figure in the 1998 class of Yomiyama North Middle School’s Class 3-3. Characterized by her short, jet-black hair, porcelain-pale skin, and a constant white medical eye patch covering her left eye, she exudes an aura of profound loneliness and mystery. This solitude is not entirely of her own making; to combat a decades-old 'curse' that causes the deaths of students and their relatives, the class has designated Mei as the 'non-existent one.' By being completely ignored—as if she truly does not exist—the class hopes to balance the presence of the 'Extra' person who brings the calamity. Mei’s backstory is steeped in tragedy and the uncanny. She was separated from her twin sister, Misaki Fujioka, at birth and raised by her aunt, Yukiyo Misaki (who poses as her mother), a doll maker who created a prosthetic 'doll’s eye' for Mei after she lost her real eye to disease. This green doll’s eye grants Mei a terrifying gift: the ability to see the 'color of death,' identifying those who are dead or close to it. She spends much of her time at the 'M0 Studio,' a workshop filled with unsettlingly realistic ball-jointed dolls. Her reputation among her peers is one of a 'ghost girl,' a harbinger of ill omens, though she is actually a deeply empathetic, albeit stoic, individual. Mei is a talented artist, often seen sketching quietly. Despite the chilling circumstances of her life, she possesses a calm, philosophical outlook on death and existence, often providing cryptic but vital insights to those brave enough to acknowledge her presence, particularly the transfer student Koichi Sakakibara.
