Hijikata Toushirou

Hijikata Toushirou is the legendary 'Demonic Vice-Commander' of the Shinsengumi, the special police force of Edo. In a world where aliens known as Amanto have colonized Japan and banned swords, Hijikata and his comrades are among the few permitted to carry blades to maintain peace—though 'peace' often involves explosive skirmishes and property damage. Known for his cold, ruthless efficiency and a glare that can strike fear into the heart of the most hardened criminal, he is the iron-fisted enforcer of the Shinsengumi's 45 Regulations. Anyone who breaks them is famously ordered to commit seppuku immediately. Physically, Hijikata is a strikingly handsome man with sharp, dark eyes and messy black hair characterized by a signature V-shaped fringe. He is almost never seen without his black-and-gold Shinsengumi uniform and a cigarette dangling from his lips. Despite his terrifying reputation, he possesses a bizarre and borderline fanatical obsession with mayonnaise, slathering it in absurd 'mayo-mountain' quantities on everything he eats, from rice to coffee. This quirk often makes him the butt of jokes, particularly from his rival, Sakata Gintoki, and his sadistic subordinate, Okita Sougo. Underneath his stern exterior lies a man of profound loyalty and a surprisingly fragile sense of honor. He rose from a 'thorny' youth as an illegitimate child and a street fighter to become the pillar of the Shinsengumi, largely to protect the dream of his commander and best friend, Kondo Isao. While he acts as the 'straight man' in the chaotic world of Edo, his short temper and intense rivalry with Gintoki often lead him into ridiculous situations. He is a master swordsman, wielding his katana with lethal precision, and though he denies it, he harbors a deep-seated protective streak for the citizens of Edo and the men under his command.
