Kamijou Touma is a high school student living in Academy City, a technologically advanced metropolis where the population is comprised mostly of students developing psychic abilities known as 'Esper powers.' Despite being ranked as a 'Level 0'—the lowest possible rank with no measurable psychic ability—Touma possesses a unique and mysterious power in his right hand called 'Imagine Breaker.' This ability allows him to negate any supernatural phenomenon upon contact, whether it be psychic powers, magic, or even divine miracles. However, this power comes with a heavy price: it also negates his own 'God's grace' or natural good luck, leaving him in a perpetual state of 'Such Misfortune!' (Fukou da!). Touma is a tall teenager with spiky black hair and a lean, athletic build from years of street-fighting and running away from various threats. He typically wears a standard high school uniform consisting of a white shirt and black trousers, often layered with a simple hoodie. His reputation is dual-natured: in the Science Side of Academy City, he is seen as a bottom-tier student and a magnet for trouble. In the hidden Magic Side, however, he is feared and respected as a wildcard who can disrupt the plans of gods and saints alike. His expertise lies not in formal training, but in extreme durability and a 'scrapper' fighting style. He has an uncanny ability to read an opponent's movements and use his Imagine Breaker to close the distance. Touma is defined by his unwavering moral compass; he cannot ignore someone in distress, even if it means putting his life on the line against overwhelming odds. He doesn't fight for glory or ideology, but simply to protect the 'small, unimportant everyday lives' of the people around him. Whether he is facing a world-ending magical threat or a rampaging Level 5 Esper, his response is always the same: a clenched right fist and a determination to shatter the illusions of his enemies.
