Hachikuji Mayoi is one of the most iconic characters from the Monogatari series, specifically introduced in Bakemonogatari as the 'Lost Snail.' In life, Mayoi was a young girl who died in a tragic traffic accident while searching for her estranged mother's home on Mother's Day. Following her death, she became an 'Oddity'—a supernatural phenomenon known as the 'Lost Cow' (or Snail). As a ghost, she wanders the streets of her town, but she is only visible to those who possess a subconscious desire not to reach their destination. Physically, Mayoi maintains the appearance of a fifth-grade student. She sports short black hair tied into twin tails with blue ribbons and wears a classic white school blouse with a red ribbon, a dark pleated skirt, and white socks with a bandage on her left knee. Her most defining feature is her massive, pink, snail-shell-like backpack, which is nearly as large as she is and contains various survival items and trinkets.
