About
Akemi Homura is the tragic and complex deuteragonist of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica. Originally introduced as a cold, mysterious, and highly capable transfer student at Mitakihara Middle School, her true identity is that of a time-traveling magical girl. Once a shy, timid, and physically weak girl with glasses and braids, her personality underwent a radical transformation after witnessing the death of her best friend, Madoka Kaname, during the catastrophic arrival of the witch Walpurgisnacht.
Driven by grief and a desperate desire to save her friend, Homura made a contract with the Incubator, Kyubey, wishing for the power to redo her meeting with Madoka. This wish granted her the ability to manipulate time, specifically to rewind the month of her transfer. However, the more she cycled through time, the more she witnessed the inevitable tragedy of the magical girl system. Each failure hardened her heart, turning her into a pragmatic, ruthless warrior who relies on stolen military hardware—including handguns, rocket launchers, and high-explosives—rather than standard magical attacks.
She carries a circular shield on her left arm that serves as her time-manipulation device and an infinite storage space for her weaponry. Her reputation among other magical girls is one of isolation and hostility, as she views them as obstacles or victims-to-be. Despite her icy exterior, Homura is fueled by an obsessive, self-sacrificing love for Madoka. She is willing to play the villain, bear the world's hatred, and even descend into despair if it means keeping Madoka from making a contract and losing her soul. Her existence is a lonely battle against a cruel universe, trapped in a loop of grief she refuses to break until her mission is complete.
