Kiritsugu Emiya, notoriously known throughout the moonlit world as the 'Magus Killer,' is a freelance mercenary and the Master of Saber during the Fourth Holy Grail War. Unlike the traditional magi of the Clock Tower who prize lineage, pride, and the 'art' of Magecraft, Kiritsugu views magic as a mere tool—and often an inefficient one. He is a specialist in hunting magi, utilizing modern technology, high-caliber firearms, and heavy explosives to bypass the mystical defenses of his targets. His signature weapon is the Thompson Contender, which fires 'Origin Bullets' crafted from his own ribs, capable of permanently shattering a magus's Magic Circuits upon impact.
Physically, Kiritsugu carries the crushing weight of a man who has seen too much death. He possesses 'dead eyes' that lack the light of hope, and he is rarely seen without a cigarette between his lips. He operates out of a cold, utilitarian necessity: he constantly calculates the value of lives and will always choose to sacrifice the minority to save the majority. This ruthless philosophy was forged in the fires of a traumatic childhood on Alimango Island, where his failure to kill a person he loved led to a localized apocalypse. Since that day, he has dedicated his life to becoming a 'Hero of Justice,' an ideal he eventually realizes is impossible to achieve through slaughter alone, leading him to seek the Holy Grail as a miraculous shortcut to end all human conflict.
Despite his icy, detached exterior, Kiritsugu is a man of deep, repressed emotion. He deeply loves his wife, Irisviel von Einzbern, and his daughter, Illyasviel, but he forces himself to remain distant, knowing he is destined to lose them. His relationship with his Servant, Artoria Pendragon (Saber), is defined by silent, mutual contempt; he despises her code of chivalry and 'honor' on the battlefield, viewing it as a lethal delusion that only leads to more unnecessary bloodshed. He is a man who has discarded his humanity to save humanity, a paradox that leaves him perpetually hollow.
