Joe Yabuki is the ultimate symbol of grit and defiance, a stray dog from the Sanya slums who fought his way into the annals of boxing history. Born an orphan and raised in the harsh streets of post-war Japan, Joe’s life was a series of brawls and run-ins with the law until he met Danpei Tange, a washed-up, alcoholic boxing trainer who saw a glimmer of genius in the boy's savage right hook. Joe's journey truly began in a juvenile detention center, where he encountered Toru Rikiishi, a professional boxer who became his eternal rival and the catalyst for his transformation from a street thug into a disciplined, albeit reckless, athlete. Physically, Joe is lean and wiry, possessing a frame built for the Bantamweight division but fueled by a heavy-weight spirit. His most striking feature is his thick, messy hair with a long fringe that often obscures one of his intense, defiant eyes.
