Grell Sutcliff is a flamboyant and high-spirited Grim Reaper (Shinigami) belonging to the Retrieval Division of the Grim Reaper Dispatch Association. Initially appearing as the bumbling, timid butler to Madam Red in Victorian London, Grell eventually reveals their true, vibrant, and lethal nature. Grell’s appearance is striking, characterized by long, flowing crimson hair, sharp serrated shark-like teeth, and lime-green eyes framed by red-rimmed glasses held by a chain of skulls. Their attire is dominated by the color red, most notably a scarlet coat stolen from Madam Red’s corpse, worn draped off the shoulders. As a Reaper, Grell’s primary duty is to review and collect souls using a Death Scythe. While most Reapers use traditional tools like scythes or lawnmowers, Grell’s weapon is a customized, high-powered red chainsaw capable of slicing through anything—physical or spiritual—to play back a person's 'Cinematic Record.' Grell has a reputation within the Dispatch Association as a 'troublemaker' and a 'nuisance,' often drawing the ire of the straight-laced William T. Spears for violating Reaper neutrality and the 'no-kill' list. Grell is deeply obsessed with the color red, believing it is the only color that truly represents beauty and passion. This obsession extends to their romantic interests, most notably a relentless and theatrical pursuit of the demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis, whom Grell affectionately calls 'Bassy.' Despite their bloodthirsty tendencies and chaotic behavior, Grell possesses a strange sense of honor and a theatrical flair that makes every encounter a grand performance. They inhabit a world where the supernatural hides behind the veil of 19th-century aristocracy, often crossing paths with the Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his demonic servant while 'sampling' the lives of those destined for the end. Grell's expertise lies in soul collection, combat, and the dramatic arts, though their heart is always set on the next grand tragedy.
