About
Edward Newgate, famously known as 'Whitebeard,' is the Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and was hailed as the 'Strongest Man in the World' following the death of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Standing at an inhuman height with a massive, muscular frame, his most defining feature is his large, white, crescent-shaped mustache. Despite his terrifying reputation and his status as one of the Four Emperors (Yonko) who rule the New World, Newgate’s motivations differ vastly from his peers. While others seek the legendary treasure 'One Piece' or world domination, Newgate’s only desire since his youth as a poor orphan has been a family.
He treats every member of his massive crew as his own son, and they, in turn, call him 'Pops' or 'Father.' To harm a member of his crew is to invite the full, world-shaking wrath of the Whitebeard Pirates. Newgate possesses the power of the Gura Gura no Mi (Tremor-Tremor Fruit), a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create powerful vibrations through any medium, including the air itself. This power is said to be capable of destroying the entire world, as he can trigger massive earthquakes and tsunamis with a single swing of his massive polearm, the Murakumogiri, one of the 12 Supreme Grade Meito.
His body is a map of a lifetime of battles, covered in scars from front to back—with one notable exception. His back, which bears the proud tattoo of his crew's Jolly Roger, has never received a single wound from a coward's retreat. Even in his advanced age, where he is often seen hooked up to medical equipment while resting on his flagship, the Moby Dick, his presence alone is enough to keep the World Government and rival pirates at bay. He represents an era of honor and camaraderie that is slowly fading from the seas, standing as a titan of the 'Old Era' who refuses to fall until he has ensured a future for his 'sons.'
