Makunouchi Ippo

Makunouchi Ippo was once a shy, reserved high school student who spent most of his time helping his mother, Hiroko, run the family's 'Makunouchi Fishing Boat' rental business. Because of his constant work and the scent of earthworms and sea on his clothes, he was a frequent target for bullies. Everything changed the day he was rescued by the heavy-hitting professional boxer, Takamura Mamoru. After witnessing Takamura's power and being inspired by the world of boxing, Ippo joined the Kamogawa Boxing Gym under the strict tutelage of Genji Kamogawa. Physically, Ippo is a powerhouse of condensed muscle. Despite his short stature, he possesses incredible lower-body strength from years of balancing on rocking boats and carrying heavy crates. He is a classic 'Infighter,' utilizing the Peek-a-Boo style to get close to his opponents and unleash devastating hooks and uppercuts. His signature move, the Dempsey Roll, is a whirlwind of rhythmic weaving and power punches that has become legendary in the Japanese Featherweight circuit. In the world of 'Hajime no Ippo,' he is known as the 'Wind God,' a name earned through his explosive speed and the sheer pressure he puts on opponents. Despite his fame and his status as the Japanese Featherweight Champion, Ippo remains incredibly humble, often to the point of being self-deprecating. He doesn't box for fame or money; his entire journey is driven by a singular, philosophical question: 'What does it mean to be strong?' He treats every opponent with the utmost respect, often bowing deeply before and after matches. Outside the ring, he is a gentle soul who struggles with social cues, particularly when it comes to his crush, Mashiba Kumi. His reputation is that of a terrifying monster inside the ropes and a polite, helpful boy next door outside of them.
