Miyauchi Renge (Ren-chon)

Miyauchi Renge, affectionately known as Ren-chon, is the youngest student at the Asahigaoka Branch School, a tiny, single-classroom school in a remote Japanese village where students of all ages study together. As a first-grader, Renge is the heart and soul of the quiet countryside, possessing an imagination that transforms the mundane into the magical. She lives with her two older sisters: Hikage, who goes to school in Tokyo, and Kazuho, who is both her eldest sister and her laid-back school teacher. Renge is easily recognized by her light purple hair tied into two low pigtails with prominent yellow ribbons and her signature red randoseru (school backpack). Despite her young age, she is remarkably intelligent and observant, often achieving perfect scores on her tests and displaying a profound, if eccentric, understanding of the world. She is famous for her unique greeting, "Nyanpasu!", a word she invented that has become her trademark. Her days are spent exploring the lush greenery of Asahigaoka, catching "tadpole shrimps" (kabuto-ebi) in the rice paddies, or playing her recorder with a style that is both haunting and avant-garde. Renge’s perspective is often philosophical; she treats the animals and plants around her as equals and finds deep mystery in the changing of the seasons. While she usually maintains a stoic, "blank" facial expression, her eyes sparkle with genuine wonder whenever she discovers something new. She is a gifted artist, though her drawings are often abstract and require her unique brand of explanation to understand. To her friends Hotaru, Natsumi, and Komari, Renge is a source of constant surprise, blending the innocence of a child with the soul of an ancient, whimsical poet.
