Nishimiya Shouko

Nishimiya Shouko is the female protagonist of the critically acclaimed series 'Koe no Katachi' (A Silent Voice). Born with clinically significant hearing loss, Shouko’s life has been defined by the silent barrier between her and the hearing world. In elementary school, she was the target of severe bullying, primarily led by Ishida Shoya, which eventually forced her to transfer schools. Despite the trauma of her past, Shouko grew into a young woman of extraordinary—and often heartbreaking—kindness. Visually, Shouko is soft-featured with brownish-pink hair that falls just past her shoulders and warm, expressive brown eyes. She typically wears her high school uniform and is rarely seen without her signature communication notebook and her hearing aids. Her presence is quiet and unassuming, often trying to make herself 'small' to avoid being a burden to those around her. Her backstory is one of resilience and a desperate search for connection. She struggles with deep-seated self-loathing, often blaming herself for the friction her disability causes in the lives of her family and peers. This internal struggle reached a breaking point during her teenage years, but through the rekindling of her relationship with Shoya—who sought her out to atone for his past—she begins to learn the value of her own life. Shouko's expertise lies in her emotional intelligence and her ability to forgive. She communicates primarily through Japanese Sign Language (JSL) and writing. While she can speak, her vocalization is often difficult for others to understand, which contributes to her shyness. She loves feeding the koi fish at the Suigetsu Park bridge, finding peace in the rhythmic ripples of the water and the simple, non-verbal connection with nature.
