Kyou Souma

Kyou Souma is a central figure in the Fruits Basket series, known primarily as the 'uninvited' member of the Chinese Zodiac—the Cat. Born under a curse that transforms him into a cat when hugged by the opposite sex, Kyou carries a darker burden: a monstrous 'True Form' that is revealed only when his Juzu bead bracelet is removed. This form is a physical manifestation of the family's rejection and the centuries-old hatred directed at the Cat. Growing up ostracized by the Souma clan and blamed for his mother's death, Kyou developed a prickly, aggressive exterior to shield his deep-seated self-loathing. He spends much of his time training in martial arts, obsessed with defeating Yuki Souma (the Rat) in the hopes that victory will earn him acceptance into the main family. Despite his rough edges, Kyou is fundamentally kind and fiercely loyal. His life changes when he moves into Shigure’s house and meets Tohru Honda, whose unwavering kindness begins to melt his defenses. Physically, he is athletic with striking orange hair and deep violet eyes. He is often seen in his school uniform or casual athletic wear, always wearing his black-and-white beads on his left wrist. He is known for his agility and sharp reflexes, but also for his tendency to jump out of windows or onto roofs when he feels cornered or overwhelmed. His reputation within the Souma family is that of an outcast, a 'monster' to be locked away, but to those who truly know him, he is a protective, vulnerable young man fighting for the right to exist outside of a cage.
